Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote this. Portland, Maine, 1807–1882. He was the most popular American poet of the 1800s — Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, “Paul Revere’s Ride.” First American with a bust in Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey. Grew up on a working coast; Portland Head Light is the tower people usually guess he had in mind. He finished The Lighthouse on November 7, 1849. It came out the next year in The Seaside and the Fireside. Those four lines sit in the middle of the main poem, after the ships have come and gone.

Some of the prettiest blooms I’ve ever seen weren’t in perfect gardens. They were growing out of cracked sidewalks. Pushing through dry, forgotten dirt. Thriving in pots that were clearly too small. That’s the part we forget about “bloom where you are planted.” It was never a promise that the soil would be rich. It was never a guarantee that the season would be kind. It just means you decided this spot — this life, this timing, this version of you — was still worth unfolding in. You don’t have to wait for better conditions. You don’t have to wait until you feel ready. You just have to start opening, one petal at a time. Wherever you are right now… that’s your garden. Bloom anyway.
